Repellency screening of herbal products against the dengue fever vector, Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae)
نویسندگان
چکیده
Methods Plant products were evaluated for repellency in a mosquito cage containing 250 bloodstarved female Ae. aegypti under laboratory conditions, by using the human-bait technique from the standard World Health Organization (WHO) method. DEET also was tested as a standard synthetic repellent with a similar protocol to that for the plant samples. Approximately 0.1 ml of each test sample was applied evenly onto a 30 cm2 test site on one forearm of each human volunteer. Exposure experiments continued at 30 min intervals until at least two bites occurred in a threeminute period, or when a fi rst bite was followed by a confi rming bite (second bite) in the subsequent observation period. Each test was duplicated on different days for each of two human volunteers.

Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fevers are diseases which etiologic agents are transmitted by the mosquito vector Aedes aegypti Linnaeus, 1762. This species is also capable of transmitting the yellow fever virus. The vector as well as the disease has become an economic and public health problem. Affected countries invest a significant part of the gross domestic product in the vector-disease contr...
متن کاملBehavioral Response of Aedes aegypti Mosquito towards Essential Oils Using Olfactometer
BACKGROUND Aedes aegypti mosquito is responsible for transmitting human diseases like dengue and chikungunya. Personal or space protection with insect repellents is a practical approach to reducing human mosquito contact, thereby minimizing disease transmission. Essential oils are natural volatile substances from plants used as protective measure against blood-sucking mosquitoes. METHODS Twen...

Dengue is a vector-borne disease caused by dengue virus. According to the recent report of CDC that one-third population of the world are at high risk with Dengue fever. The prevalence of the dengue hemorrhagic fever was found more in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Aedes mosquitoes was reported as the main cause of transmission of dengue virus. So the current study was planned ...

Background and Objectives. Aedes aegypti, dengue fever mosquito, is primarily associated with the transmission of dengue and chikungunya in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The present investigations were carried out to assess the larvicidal efficiency of five indigenous weeds against Ae. aegypti. Methods. The 1,000 ppm hexane and ethanol extracts prepared from the leaves and stem...
متن کاملPerformance of the plant-based repellent TT-4302 against mosquitoes in the laboratory and field and comparative efficacy to 16 mosquito repellents against Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).
Repellent efficacy of the plant-based repellent, TT-4302 (5% geraniol), was compared with 16 other products in laboratory arm-in-cage trials against Aedes aegypti (L). Eight repellents (Badger, BioUD, Burt's bees, California Baby, Cutter Natural, EcoSMART, Herbal Armor, and SkinSmart) exhibited a mean repellency below 90% to Ae. aegypti at 0.5 h after application. Three repellents (Buzz Away Ex...
